My YouTube Monthly Faves #3 August 2017

I love YouTube mainly for cat videos and hilarious fail playlists but there is a lot of good viewing to be had there.  I thought I'd share with you the channel I've enjoyed watching!

This month I've enjoyed watching.....

Chris is really quite charismatic and his journey through Japan and all things Japanese is really entertaining.

Dog Days of Summer - Dog Tag!

In celebration of THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER, co-hosted by JO'S BOOK BLOG and LA LA IN THE LIBRARY, they have created a fun dog tag!

LaLa tagged me to answer some dog related questions so without further ado, lets talk dog!!

QUESTIONS

1. What was the name of your first dog?

My first dog was Lassie, a big hairy, gorgeous Golden Retriever, we grew up together.

I am led to believe that she ate my parents rent money in the back of their mini whilst my mum was in labour with me.

She was a great dog and a huge part of my childhood, she has a great temperament (unless you were a cat) and was tolerant of my using her as a horse.

2. Do you have a dog now?

My husband and I have had two dogs, our first was our gorgeous big black Labrador Max, who was taken from our too early at the age of 7 by epilepsy - I miss him still to this day.

Fern is our current dog, she is a crazy Cocker Spaniel and she helped mend our hearts after losing Max.  She is softest, happiest dog I have ever met.  She loves to eat, run, sleep, sniff and help my escape zombies!

You know how they say dogs look like their owners, well we do!

3. What is your favourite breed of dog?

This is a hellish question as I have a few -

Cocker Spaniel
Labrador Retriever
German Shepherd
Lhasa Apso
Dachshund
Pug

4. What is your favourite canine themed book?

Of late I have read a few books with great dogs in them such as....

All of these books feature amazing dogs, one is a magical drunk, one is a sweary Londoner and the other an adorable scruff.

5. Who is your favourite fictional dog?

6. What is your top movie choice with a featured canine?

7. Do you consider yourself a dog or a cat person? Why?

I consider myself TeamDog, for as long as I can remember my family has had a dog, my grandparents, cousins etc also had dogs.  I can't imagine being without one, I love playing with, walking, snuggling and running from zombies with my dog.

Cats are just not as snugly, I do love cats and growing up on a farm we had lots of them but cats are cats, they do not need us and they choose when you can snuggle, when you can play, plus have you ever seen a video of a cat being walked? Its not pretty.

BONUS QUESTION

Tell us about a personal dog related memory.

My dog related memory is just keeping the names in my head of the dogs I have loved and lost.  I'll never forget them and I know that might sound a little cheesy but these beautiful animals were a huge part of my life and it was a pleasure and privilege to spend all that precious time with them.

On a lighter note I remember when I bought my first home, we'd gone out for an hour and left Max with free reign of the house.  Coming back in to the house we noticed a huge hole in our kitchen exposing plasterboard.  Max looked incredibly innocent as if to say "I don't know who did this" but his black coat was his downfall as his face was now an obvious white colour from the wall.

FUNKO FRIDAY #2 - Melisandre (Game of Thrones)

So a couple of years back I was loitering on Instagram, as you do, and I saw lots of #shelfies with these cute little plastic dudes on them.  They were colourful and fun and in those Instagram pics I saw lots of my favourite characters from book and screen.

I wanted one, just one, that would do me.....

But just like books I couldn't stop at one, I'm not entirely sure how many I've got but I certainly have enough to justify my new weekly post Funko Friday (not very original I know).

I want to share them with you, reader dear, they happily occupy my book shelves but they crave fame and demanded their share of my blog.

This week.....

Melisandre from Game of Thrones!

I found the mystical magical Melisandre in the rather un-mystical though in my eyes totally magical Super Target in Orlando whilst I was on holiday last year - can I just say Target is awesome much better than our crappy supermarkets here.

She is a redheaded red priestess, I am a redhead, we are of course destined to be together.  She does look good with her little orange, floor grazing gown and of course her all important necklace.

Plus how good is her hair? It gives me serious envy!!  Like Jayne from last week she is the only one so far in the series that I have, ideally I'm looking for Tyrion or Daenerys next or maybe a dragon!

So do you suffer from the same affliction? The need to collect Funko's? Let me know in the comments below!!

I've been watching....#8 - Suicide Squad

So I have watched this film several times now as it always seems to be on Sky Movies and on first watched I was a bit meh about it, on second viewing I thought it was ok and on third viewing it was still ok but I really had a girl crush on Harley Quinn and was busy pricing up Harley Quinn Funko Pops.

It is not a serious film and there are some good characters in it notably Margot Robbie as the unhinged Harley and Jared Leto was suitably creepy as the Joker but I am still not entirely convinced of Cara Delevigne's acting prowess.

I don't know it just felt like something was missing from it, there was plenty of explosions and crazy fights but something just fell flat for me.  Maybe if I hadn't watching the sensational Deadpool the weekend before I might have liked this more.

Did you watch this and what did you think?

PODCASTASTIC #9 - Lake Clarity

The day that I walked in to Night Vale was the day I fell in love with podcasts.

My phone how ever got pissed off quickly as it liked Angry Birds and I'd went and put it in the great recycle bin in the cloud to make way for episodes of quirky shows that me, the owner of said phone likes!

Anyway this week I've been listening to......

Five teens head up to Camp Clarity to celebrate their last summer together, but little do they know they're about to stumble on dark secrets that surround the lake. Caves, concrete structures, and eerie coincidences are a common place around Lake Clarity. Before they know it, the teens find themselves face to face with an evil force that's been locked away for a long time. Join Seth, Ally, Mike, Erin, and Brandon as they adventure through the Lake Clarity area, and discover the past of the supposedly cursed campgrounds!

When you read the synopsis it does remind me a little of Scooby Doo but without our canine pal, it is however nothing like Scooby Doo, it did at times freak me the hell out.

Following that familiar right of passage of that summer trip to the lake, five young friends head up to camp out at Lake Clarity.

They've heard about some of the mysterious disappearances in the area but of course being young and bold they throw caution to the wind and pitch up camp.

Soon they start exploring the area and soon they discover some things that don't quite add up, a mine with a large steel reinforced door, a random building in the middle of nowhere and a possible conspiracy.

It reminded me a little of Lost in bits, but I loved this and listened to the first series in less than 24 hours, it starts out quite happy but it sure doesn't end up that way!

Check them out here

FIVE THINGS #1 - Buzzwords I Hate!

Some of my favourite posts to read are lists, random lists, book lists, lists of favourite chocolates or scary films, you get the idea.

Each Saturday I'm going to pick a topic/book/film/thing and list five things about it - don't expect it to always be favourite things!

This Saturday it is......Five Cool Buzzwords I Hate

MILLENNIALS

I hate this word.

Let's be clear I don't hate the millennials as a generation but I just hate the way everything has to be categorised.  I apparently am GenX and there is GenZ now.  Maybe I am not down with the kids enough to understand the jargon?😉

BAE

Ok BAE to me is a large defence company based in the UK who build submarines and boats amongst other large things.

I am wrong apparently, once more not down with the youth.

It apparently means your other half. Where they going for babe, missed that second b and where just to cool to own up to their mistake?

FLEEK

Fleek to me is how I imagine the French pronouncing the English word describing what you do when something lands on your arm. You flick it.

It does not describe how my eyebrows currently look, nor will it ever and FYI they look fabulous!

#BLESSED

#Blessed = #Stopbragging

 SELFIE

It is a bloody self portrait, speak properly for Kimye' sake.

FUNKO FRIDAY #1 - Jayne Cobb (Firefly)

I'll start with the one that kicked it all off -

The man they call Jayne - Jayne Cobb from the legend that is Firefly

Now when I think of Jayne this is how I imagine him, they have totally nailed his wonderful hat and of course his favourite gun Vera.

You can almost here him cursing in Chinese and threatening Simon.  God I miss Firefly, with all the power in the verse I wish I could bring it back!

Anyway he was my first Funko and I was bowled over by how cute he was.  I have tried to buy the rest of the crew but like a lot of Pops they get retired and what stock is left goes stratospheric in price but one day I hope to have the whole ship!

So do you suffer from the same affliction? The need to collect Funko's? Let me know in the comments below!!

REVIEW - Afterlife by Marcus Sakey

Title: After Life

Author: Marcus Sakey

Publisher: Thomas and Mercer

Release Date: 18th July 2017

Source: Net Galley
Soon to be a major motion picture from Imagine Entertainment and producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

Between life and death lies an epic war, a relentless manhunt through two worlds . . . and an unforgettable love story.

The last thing FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion—a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave.

He wakes without a scratch.

The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He’s relieved to spot other people—until he sees they’re carrying machetes.

Welcome to the afterlife.

Claire McCoy stands over the body of Will Brody. As head of an FBI task force, she hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in weeks. A terrorist has claimed eighteen lives and thrown the nation into panic.

Against this horror, something reckless and beautiful happened. She fell in love . . . with Will Brody.

But the line between life and death is narrower than any of us suspect—and all that matters to Will and Claire is getting back to each other.

From the author of the million-copy bestselling Brilliance Trilogy comes a mind-bending thriller that explores our most haunting and fundamental question: What if death is just the beginning?

To some death is the end but for FBI agent Will Brody, he finds that death marks the beginning of something much much worse.

Afterlife is a love story, one that is set in the present and what lies after we take our final breath.

Against the rules Will has become involved with his boss Claire and together they are involved in  a manhunt for a sniper who has so far stayed out of their way.

They of course need to find this person before they kill again but before they catch their man, Will finds himself blown up.  Imagine his surprise when he wakes up and finds the world eerily quiet, there is nobody in sight.  Buildings lay empty, vehicles seem abandoned.  What has happened?

Finding himself very much mobile he starts to explore and is happy to eventually find others but his happiness is short lived as the others carry knives and have blood lust in their eyes.  He survives this encounter and needless to say is wary of anymore encounters with people but he does meet a group of people who aren't out to kill him and what they tell him rocks his world.

Afterlife is a good read, the alternate world setting that a lot of takes place in is genuinely scary.  It is the sort of book that does give you some food for though regarding life after death and of course it is ultimately a love story, will the boy get his girl?

Definitely worth a look.

Thanks to Thomas and Mercer for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Running for my life - Zombies Run 5K - Week One Take 2

Over the last few years I have dabbled with running, every time using Six to Start's awesome Zombies Run and Zombies Run 5K app, each time I have failed miserably.  I would diligently go out and try my best but I think the most I managed to last was a month.  I have no willpower.

I am a failure.

But that is not the attitude and I don't know what is different this time, it could be the fact I have bought a decent sports bra and a hands free dog lead which FYI is the best thing ever.  These two simple things along with some spark inside me screaming at me to get going has led me back to Zombies Run 5K.

Zombies Run is excellent, the combination of story and exercise, ZR5K takes those same elements but puts you through 8 weeks (with three chapters/workouts a week) of turning your lack of running to a whole 5k of running.

Can I make it to week 8?  Well I thought if I posted to the internet my weekly progress it would help me get there.
ZR5K - WEEK 1 TAKE TWO

Gosh darnit, I hate technology some times.  You know you are getting along swimmingly and the bam those pesky developers decide to make an already great app better.  But there are little niggles with the update.

Anway, I have it working again but I got so pissed off with it, I reinstalled, wiped my progress and started again from week one.  I suppose I threw my dummy out the pram - #firstworldproblems.

It is still not working perfectly but to be honest it felt good to be revisiting week one just that little bit fitter than before and going back over the basics.

You know what though, I do feel fitter, which I'm amazed at.  There is a set of steps that I occasionally walk up on my dog walking route and before they used to burn like buggery when I walked up them but that seems to have gone away.

So all in all I am happy with my progress, even if that progress has taken me back the way!
