I've been watching....#7 - Police Academy

Back in the olden days - aka the 80's - every summer I would gleefully visit my local VHS (don't know what a VHS is, ask your parents) rental establishment and rent the latest goofball comedy which for several years was the Police Academy series.

I haven't watched it for years until I saw it pop up on my Sky Cinema golden oldies list and I thought WTF, lets have a walk down memory lane.

It is just a stupid and daft as I remember, in these modern times it probably is extremely un-pc but you know what it reminded me of a time when summers were always sunny and I didn't have a mortgage to pay.

Plus my goodness how young does Kim Cattrall look?

If you haven't watched it, it is the tale of a group of misfits who end up at the local Police Academy to become the best of the best, or in their case, what was available.

They are expected to fail miserably and of course it all ends well in the end like all 80's comedy films.  These films always made my summer.

As is the trend with Hollywood at the moment, films are getting remade left, right and centre, I hope they don't attempt this one.

Anyway here are some clips from this comedy "classic"!

PODCASTASTIC #8 - A Scottish Podcast

The day that I walked in to Night Vale was the day I fell in love with podcasts.

My phone how ever got pissed off quickly as it liked Angry Birds and I'd went and put it in the great recycle bin in the cloud to make way for episodes of quirky shows that me, the owner of said phone likes!

Anyway this week I've been listening to......

A Scottish Podcast' is a serialised modern audio drama. When washed up radio DJ Lee finds himself "between jobs" he decides to launch a paranormal investigative podcast series, inspired by the likes of 'The Black Tapes', 'The Message', and 'Limetown'. Enter 'The Terror Files'. Aided by his long suffering sidekick, struggling musician Dougie, the pair embark on their first investigation - by heading down into a newly uncovered vault underneath Edinburgh's old town. Lee is prepared to sprinkle a bit of fiction into his reporting to keep things lively. But it soon becomes clear that these long forgotten tunnels harbour a secret far darker than he ever could've hoped to conjure up with his own imagination. This is a dramatised work of fiction with colourful language. Not for the easily offended.

Imagine if Still Game and Trainspotting gave birth to a podcast, a podcast full of shit tons of fucking bad language (yep including the C word!!), Scottish banter and spooky stuff going down in the streets of my beautiful country.  I present to you A Scottish Podcast!

Now as a fellow Scot, I instantly loved this because the banter from the voice cast is pure dead brilliant (!) and it felt like the main guys Dougie and Lee could be my husband and his pals down the pub.

The only difference being Dougie and Lee do actually leave the pub!

Long story short Lee has started a podcast, The Terror Files and ropes Dougie in to occasionally help. His first podcast involves the discovery of an underground vault in Edinburgh.

Now if you aren't familiar with Edinburgh it does actually have underground vaults, I know this because I nearly soiled myself when I visited one during the night on a hen (bacherlorette for my over the pond pals) weekend, it was scary shit.

Anyhoo I could visualise where Dougie and Lee where exploring quite easily and this added to my listening experience.  They don't just go the Edinburgh they also visit a remote isle and look out for things that go bump in the night.

Add to this a cast of gentleman gangsters, football coaches and a very drunk woman and you get a totally addictive podcast.

Check them out here

My Blogging Goals for 2017 - REVISITED!!!!

REVISITED!!!!

Ahhhh, with the start of a new year, new hope sprang in to my mind, I could do anything and what better way to prove I can do anything by posting on the internet for everyone to see what I aimed to do.

Its nearly August and I thought I should revisit my goals to see how things are shaping up and to basically have a laugh at my past self for being so full of unrealistic bollocks!

So without further ado lets have a look at this list, now with added notes which you will find beneath/beside each one in RED!

PS: It will of course be further ridiculed in December!!
BLOG RELATED
  • Request less NetGalley books and concentrate on getting the ones already downloaded read! - This did work for a while but NG has had a LOT of temptation of late and I have no willpower.
  • Increase NetGalley percentage from 35% to 50% (I'd go for higher but need to be realistic) - Nope in fact it has gone down 😞
  • Earn the over 500 books reviewed NetGalley badge, have the 200 badge just now - What was I thinking, maybe next year!
  • Actually comment on reviews on GoodReads - Just can't get in the habit
  • Up my game on Instagram, I'd like to have 1000 followers by end of the year, I have about 450 just now. - This is tricky as f***, I love Instagram but I still have roughly the same amount of followers, my images are crap!
  • Increase my Pinterest reach from just over 4000 followers to 7500 by the end of the year - OK I am making progress with this as I now have just under 5.8K followers which is on the right track!
  • Blog frequently about another subject - beauty, fashion, something....! - Yes I am blogging about my adventures with the Zombies Run 5K app.
  • On Amazon.co.uk get in to the top 500 reviewer - Ranked #1663 at the mo!
  • Buy another damn bookcase to house all those review copies! - I did and I could do with another one!
  • Up my ante on Twitter from 1300 to 2000 - Currently at 1414!
  • Finally read Throne of Glass - Nope not yet...
  • Not exactly blog related but I really want to do NaNoWriMo - Maybe one year but unlikely to be this year.
  • Manage to get round blogs I enjoy more often - Using DIGG to keep an eye on my fave blogs!
  • Reply to comments quickly! - Could be quicker!
  • Master Google Analytics and figure out exactly what my terrible page views are. - Too scared to look!
  • Increase said page views.- Trying my damnedest!
  • Sort out my tags on the blog and delete ones that are no longer relevant. - Slowly working my way through them.
  • Schedule so I have at least 10 posts waiting to go. - I don't have 10 but I do have some which is a vast improvement.
  • Finish my Florida trip report. - I'm in the process of booking Florida 2018 so more of hope of that trip report than this one!
  • Review books faster. - Mmm getting there....
  • Get better with graphics. - Found some great websites like Canva that are fantastic.
  • Lastly most controversially, only buy one kindle and one physical book at month, that is one of each kind!! - No comment, you can't prove anything...

PERSONAL LIFE

  • Become a planner extraordinaire with my Happy Planner - Its too big, I have bought a Ban.do one for this year.
  • Eat less crap - I'm trying.....
  • Get my inner Hygge on (cosy house) - It is slowly improving.
  • Get me inner Marie Kondo on (declutter house) - See above.
  • Embrace my Kayla Itsines fitness plan - Didn't like her so went with Blogilates instead which is much better and I genuinely like Cassey Ho who does it.
  • Start running again with Zombies Run - F***ING TOTAL RESULT, OH YES!!!!
  • Learn something new everyday - Today I learnt from The Rock what I can do with Siri!
  • Watch the last three series of Breaking Bad - #Failed
  • Learn how to use the off road buttons in my car for when the bad weather comes so I can 4x4 like a total pro - Yes I can and I went on a course AND I have a certificate and everything!
  • Be happy - This isn't always easy but I do try.
  • Make sure my family are happy and healthy  - See Be Happy
  • Make sure my blogging self doesn't encourage my personal self to buy books - #totalfail

PERSONAL/BLOG LIFE

  • Remind myself that I am my own person and not to be disheartened by uber bloggers/vloggers/instagrammers with a zillion followers and perfectly clean houses as I am working mum of two kids who only blogs as a hobby and is doing perfectly fine thank you very much. - Totally my mantra!
  • To not buy books............ Why did I put this down so many times #guilt

So all in all if this was a school report it would be marked "Could try harder" but hey it's only July 😜!

Running for my life - REVIEW - Zombies, Run! by Naomi Alderman & Six to Start

Title: Zombies, Run!

Author: Naomi Alderman & Six to Start

Publisher: Penguin

Release Date: 27th October 2016

Source: Own Copy

So I have had to go back to start with ZR5K so whilst I catch up with my runs, I thought I should share my musings on the Zombies Run book!
'OUR FIRST JOB IS SURVIVAL. IF WE SURVIVE, WE LEARN, WHEN WE LEARN, WE MAKE TOMORROW BETTER THAN TODAY. THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN: WE JUST HAVE TO KEEP ON GOING'
The zombie apocalypse is here. We have all lost a lot, but we are surviving. Together we will overcome the outbreak but we need every man, women and child to do their bit. This is an informational guide to help you stay fit and healthy in both body and mind during the crisis. It includes:
Indoor activities that build the strength, stamina and flexibility you need to survive contact with the zombie hordes
- Expertly-designed running, cycling and swimming programmes to build up your distance safely when venturing out for supplies
- Advice on nutritious meals when resources are sparse and treats need to be rationed
- Tips on building and maintaining a community and remaining fit of mind when humanity is pushed to the brink
The advice within the pages of ZOMBIES, RUN! will prove the difference between life and death in the coming days, weeks and months. Humans are wondrous beings; this is not the end of us.
WE CAN BECOME STRONGER. WE CAN BECOME FITTER. AND TOGETHER WE WILL SURVIVE.

So I am a longtime fan of the Zombies Run series and of late I am working my way through the Zombies Run 5K app.

Now the thing I love about the ZR series is not only is a more novel way to get fit, it also has a story that is updated with each instalment.  The more you run (or walk or shamble) the more you find out about the survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

The ZR book is basically a book that tells you how to safely keep fit when the world has been over run with the shambling undead.

It has segments from some familiar faces (voices?) which gives you a little bit more insight in to their back story, apart from that it is full of survival and fitness hints and tips.  It tells you had to safely build up your fitness without attracting those pesky zombs.

It does complement the apps perfectly but if you buying this thinking it purely a novel, it ain't!  But it is a great addition to the series and for a fan like me was definitely worth a peek.

Rapid Reviews #2 - Graphic Novels

Sometimes you need to just get to the point, you don't need to go on and on and on and on about a book that you have enjoyed (or not).

This is what Rapid Reviews is for, my quick words of wisdom....

This week some graphic novels reads that have been on my pile.

Published by Image - 13th May 2015

The back cover says....

Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life. INJECTION is the new ongoing series created by the acclaimed creative team of Moon Knight. It is science fiction, tales of horror, strange crime fiction, techno-thriller, and ghost story all at the same time. A serialised sequence of graphic novels about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection.
It looks...

Dark and mysterious.......

The words are....

Also dark and mysterious, told from the present and the past.  I have read it a couple of times and I'm still not entirely sure what happened, make it becomes clearer in the second volume?

Who should read it....

Lovers of dark and mysterious comics

I rate it

Published by Image - 25th March 2015

The back cover says....

Millennia ago, mankind fled the earth's surface into the bottomless depths of the darkest oceans. Shielded from a merciless sun's scorching radiation, the human race tried to stave off certain extinction by sending robotic probes far into the galaxy, to search for a new home among the stars. Generations later, one family is about to be torn apart, in a conflict that will usher in the final race to save humanity from a world beyond hope. Dive into an aquatic fantasy like none you've ever seen before, as writer RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE, Captain America) and artist GREG TOCCHINI (Last Days of American Crime) bring you a tale of mankind's final hour in the cold, deathly dark of the sea. Collects LOW #1-6.

It looks...

Good, beautiful illustrated cover.
The words are....

I thought I would like this, end of the world books are usually my cup of tea but I just couldn't get in to this at all I am afraid.

Who should read it....

Water babies and lovers of all things wet.

I rate it

The Sunday Post #62 - 23rd July 2017

Welcome to my Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberley over at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer . Join me as I ramble about my week in and out of the blogosphere.

Not a lot to report I'm afraid.  Work has been busy but on the plus side at the end of the week I have a weeks holiday coming up which I can't wait for.

I have been trying to keep at my running but the update to Zombies Run app has put the stoppers on that with its bugs that have stopped me in my tracks.  Hopefully that'll be sorted soon as I am really enjoying going for my runs.

Did we all enjoy Game of Thrones? It was very enjoyable and that start was brilliant, Go Arya!!

Have a great week everyone!
